Youth Training Program Aims to Help Worker Shortage in Construction Trades

Heavy and Highway Local 60 are working with The Westchester-Putnam Building & Construction Trades Council, Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano, andthe Yonkers IDA to provide a program for young residents to train for a solid career in the construction trades. The IDA approved up to $250,000 to form the Yonkers Pathways to Apprenticeship program (P2A). A 5 year course built for Yonkers residents age 18 to 24.

With a serious lack of skilled tradesman a national coalition has been formed to entice younger people to tackle the workforce shortage, According to a recent survey from the Associated General Contractors of America, 79% of New York companies are having a difficult time filling craft positions and 56% believe it will get harder to hire those positions in the coming year.
